Lifelong learning is said to be self-regulated, motivating learners. Also to voluntarily learning in all sorts of situations, such as compulsory situations i.e. school, and throughout adult life.

To be efficient lifelong learners an individual must first be able to be a self-regulated learner. This means that they should have the skills to set goals, monitor progress and make the effort to learn on a regular basis. They must have the skill to know how they learn best, and then use a plan to get to the goal they have set (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2013).

To be an effective lifelong learner, an individual must not only have the skills to know how to learn, but also be willing to learn and too take control of their learning and behaviour (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2013).

Living in the digital world of today, the teachers must continue their lifelong learning because of the technology changes that occur on a regular basis (Howell, 2012). If the pattern of technology changes continues like it has for the past ten years, teachers must be willing to know what is going on and be interested in learning it to be able to teach it to the students.
